Base Layer
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 (10 ounce) package of marshmallows
- 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
- 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
Caramel Layer
- 11 ounces caramels
- 2 tablespoons milk
Chocolate Topping
- 1 1/4 cup chocolate chips (milk chocolate or semi-sweet)
- Prepare the pan: Butter a 9×13 inch baking dish or spray it with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking. Set the dish aside.
- Melt butter and marshmallows: In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the marshmallows and stir continuously until they are completely melted and combined with the butter.
- Add peanut butter: Reduce the heat to low and stir in the creamy peanut butter. Continue cooking for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly to ensure the peanut butter is fully incorporated.
- Mix in cereal: Remove the saucepan from the heat and immediately stir in the Rice Krispies cereal until the cereal is evenly coated with the marshmallow mixture. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Melt caramel layer: In a separate saucepan over medium heat, combine the caramels and milk. Stir frequently until the mixture is smooth and fully melted.
- Pour caramel: Remove the caramel mixture from the heat and pour it evenly over the Rice Krispies base, spreading it gently.
- Melt chocolate topping: In another saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate chips while stirring frequently until smooth and melted.
- Spread chocolate: Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the caramel layer. Place the dish in the refrigerator and chill until the chocolate is set, approximately 30 minutes.
- Serve: Once set, cut the bars into squares and serve.
Notes
- Use creamy peanut butter for the best texture; chunky peanut butter can be substituted but will change the consistency.
- If you prefer a different chocolate flavor, semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips can be used instead of milk chocolate.
- Make sure to press the Rice Krispies mixture firmly into the pan to create a solid base.
- To make cutting easier, allow the bars to chill completely before slicing.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and chocolate set.
