Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 2¼ cups (280 g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 teaspoons peppermint extract
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Chocolate Coating

  • 8 oz (225 g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil (optional, for smoother chocolate coating)

Optional Garnish

  • Festive sprinkles or crushed candy canes

Instructions

  1. Make the Peppermint Dough: In a mixing bowl, beat together the sifted powdered sugar, softened unsalted butter, peppermint extract, and heavy cream until the mixture forms a smooth, stiff dough that holds its shape.
  2. Form the Patties: Shape the dough into small discs, roughly 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter, and arrange them evenly on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Place the sheet in the freezer for 20 minutes to firm up the patties for easier dipping.
  3. Melt the Chocolate: While the patties chill, melt the chopped semi-sweet or dark chocolate, combining it with the vegetable oil if using, either in the microwave in short bursts or over a double boiler until smooth and glossy.
  4. Dip the Peppermint Discs: Take the chilled peppermint discs and dip each one into the melted chocolate coating completely, allowing any excess chocolate to drip off. Return the coated patties to the parchment-lined sheet.
  5. Decorate and Set: If desired, sprinkle the tops with festive sprinkles or crushed candy canes while the chocolate is still wet. Then chill the sheet in the refrigerator until the chocolate coating sets completely, typically about 30 minutes.

Notes

  • Using a parchment-lined baking sheet helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easier.
  • Vegetable oil is optional in the chocolate coating but helps achieve a smoother, shinier finish and easier dipping.
  • Store peppermint patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute the butter and heavy cream with suitable plant-based alternatives.
  • Chilling the patties before dipping is crucial for a clean chocolate coating that sets quickly.
