Ingredients

Scale

Batter

  • ½ cup softened salted butter
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Cinnamon Sugar Swirl & Topping

  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, using a hand mixer or stand mixer with paddle attachment, beat the softened butter together with granulated sugar and brown sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in the egg, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until all ingredients are fully combined.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: Sift the all-purpose flour together with the baking soda directly over the wet ingredients. Mix gently just until the batter starts to come together, then fold with a silicone spatula until no large lumps remain, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, stir together ⅓ cup granulated sugar and 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon. Set aside.
  6. Layer Batter and Cinnamon Sugar: Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture over the batter, then use a butter knife to gently swirl it into the batter.
  7. Add Remaining Batter and Swirl: Pour the remaining batter over the first layer, smoothing out the top, then sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar on top and swirl it in with a butter knife again for a beautiful layered effect.
  8. Add Butter Topping: Drizzle 2 tablespoons of melted butter evenly over the top of the loaf to create a rich, golden crust.
  9. Bake the Bread: Place in the preheated oven and bake for 50-70 minutes, or until a cake tester or toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Cool the Bread: Let the bread cool in the pan for about 20 minutes. Then carefully remove it from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely to room temperature before slicing or storing.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients to ensure even mixing.
  • Check the bread at 50 minutes and then every 5 minutes thereafter to avoid overbaking.
  • To store, wrap the cooled bread tightly in plastic wrap or foil to maintain freshness.
  • This bread can be toasted and served with butter or cream cheese for a delicious breakfast treat.
  • If buttermilk is unavailable, you can substitute with 1 cup of milk plus 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar, let sit for 5 minutes.
